The proliferation of music streaming services and 99 cent downloads has helped stem the tide of illegal music downloads. Who knew if you gave the consumer a way to purchase music in the format that they wanted that they’d abandon the shady alternatives? Well everyone except the music industry it seems.

Music piracy was said to be down as much as 80% thanks to services like Spotify. That’s good enough news for the RIAA to lay off that battalion of lawyers who were hell bent on suing their customers, right? Not so fast sparky. The RIAA is still going after the pirates in 2013 although they aren’t employing as heavy handed penalties to keep them from being awash in bad PR.
